In 2023, Internews’ Media-K project in the Kyrgyz Republic will continue supporting regional journalism development, holding events in the regions to unite local journalists and improve their professionalism.
The Media Independence Support Initiative (Media-K) project announces a competition of ideas to create platforms where current and aspiring journalists can meet in an atmosphere of cooperation and discuss pressing problems in journalism. As well as exchange knowledge, support and promote various initiatives to improve professional journalism at the regional level.
Based on the competition results, seven leading journalists from different regions of the country will be selected, who will offer the most interesting ideas. Selected leaders will receive scholarship support and funding for events.
One initiative will be supported in each region. Internews welcomes co-financing of activities from applicants through fundraising or cooperation with sustainable projects aimed at improving the quality of content in the areas.
Program timeline: The program to support regional Kyrgyz-language journalism is designed for five years. Applications for this competition are accepted from February to August 2023.
Who can participate?
The competition is open to journalists from the regions of Kyrgyzstan who can:
– generate ideas;
– promote proposals to improve the quality of content at the level of their regions;
– unite journalists of different ages;
– to contribute to the consolidation of journalists;
Applicants must demonstrate:
– sufficient motivation to unite journalists in the region;
– ability and willingness to spend personal time initiating, organizing and conducting discussions, and debates;
– Willingness to organize and hold at least six informal meetings: discussion, practical, adaptable and change-oriented
– readiness to create and, in the future, develop an informal network of professional journalists in the region.

It aims to increase the professionalism and independence of the media, which improves citizens’ access to diverse, balanced, less biased information that helps make informed decisions and reflects the public interest.
