The new three-year project "Media-K" focused on development of independent media in Kyrgyzstan.

The Representative Office of Internews in Kyrgyzstan announces the launch of the new three-year project «Cultivating Media Independence Initiative» (Media-K), focused on development of independent media in Kyrgyzstan.

The project is implemented with the assistance of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) in partnership with FHI360 and is focused on citizens' access to diverse and balanced information that helps to make decisions and reflects the public interest. The project will also improve the professionalism and independence of media in the Kyrgyz Republic.


Within the framework of the Media-K project, Internews in Kyrgyzstan team will implement the following tasks in three areas:


  • Initiation of media market for own production and increase the amount of multimedia content with extensive coverage.
  • Increase in advertising revenues among the Target Media.
  • Consolidation and improvement of media sector coordination.


 The first component is focused on the production of own products and multimedia content among six partners and involves grant support for the production of digital content and innovative formats for coverage, which will promote accountability and civic participation.

Internews intends to hold an annual open competition for media and production companies to create interesting content with financing of the most successful pilot projects.


A competition for two scholarships will be held to support data journalism. Selected recipients-journalists, together with their editorial team will prepare publications in the media on a regular basis under the guidance of experienced mentors.


The second component is focused on assisting media partners in increasing advertising revenue.


Key partners will receive advice on improving business processes, using audience research data to modify and improve content, develop strategies for increasing revenue.


Th  The  third component of the project involves the introduction of a people-meters system and assistance to key partners in making audience research.


Over the next three years, Internews will continue to support positive activities to improve media legislation by assisting Media Policy Institute and other organizations working to improve the media law environment.


"The Internews team in the Kyrgyzstan is planning a big media event - an annual Media Conference that will bring together professionals from independent television stations," said Elina Karakulova, Country Director of Internews in Kyrgyzstan. - The conference will organize master classes under the guidance of famous international and local trainers. The media fair will give TV channels and production studios the opportunity to submit their content for exchange or sale. "

We plan to award Media Super Star Awards for significant achievements in television and online content, innovations in media, advertising and journalism.
