Seminar on elections in Osh for journalists of southern Kyrgyzstan

CEC organized a two-day training on elections and referendums in cooperation with IFES, UNDP and Internews Network Kyrgyzstan for 26 journalists from Osh, Jalal-Abad and Batken.

The journalists obtained information about laws that regulate press’ activities in electoral processes; differences between informing and campaigning; ways to confront bad publicity and fake news. The participants gained knowledge from six trainers who represented CEC (Central Electoral Commission), IFES (International Foundation for Electoral Systems), UNDP (United Nations Development Program), and Internews.

At the beginning of the seminar, Director of IFES, Renata Levovsky, contemplated on the role of Mass Media in elections.

Svetlana Kulikova, professor of journalistic studies in the USA, spoke about the dissemination of fake news that took place during the election campaigns in the USA in 2016; who is in charge of fake news in the USA; and why the audience likes discussing fake news.

A well-known media expert and journalist Azamat Tynaev shared his experience in avoiding errors in campaigns, and reporting on elections in media.
